Lotus flowers can be found in white, red, blue, and purple colors in addition to pink. Over the course of my 30 lotus flower sketches, I'll be exploring how to paint lotus flowers in each color. For today's lotus flower study, I revisited and updated a composition that I used previously and chose blue as my color.
Many cultures and religions revere the lotus flowers and assign various meanings to their colors. In Egyptian paintings, the blue lotus flower often symbolized the Sun and rebirth. In Buddhism, the blue lotus flower symbolizes wisdom and knowledge.
The actual blue lotus flower in nature looks nothing like my paintings, and the color blue is not an exact match. I'm ok with that as my goal is not 100% scientific accuracy. I did remain true to the convention in Egyptian paintings of not painting the blue lotus flower fully open. It's found partially open to convey to the viewer that one should never stop learning and gathering knowledge in life.
